However, Hyland and Merrill (2001) further argue that the FE (PCET) sector is considerably diverse in itself, which may be one of its problems, in trying to meet the needs of such a range of sectors of the community. The link between the PCET provision in one locality and that location’s typical community or industry identity appears to be one of the emergent issues in the diversity debate (Hyland and Merrill, 2001). This would suggest that in certain geographical areas, the nature of provision of PCET is based upon the demand from that location’s employers. How this affects access and diversity is difficult to address, but it may be that in areas where the dominant industries are those which retain a considerable gender bias, such as construction, there may be more challenges for women, for example, being fairly represented across the range of courses in one FE college. More pertinent to this discussion, however, is the notion that the other face of the coin could be equally challenging. In areas where strongly gendered bias exists in relation to industry, equal representation of males on beauty therapy and hairdressing courses might be a considerable issue. Prejudicial and stereotypical attitudes towards men in this profession might also pose a large obstacle.
